Program note:

The piece starts presenting “The Dark Age”, with a Solo Bass Saxophone (like a king walks in his kingdom). Afterwards, we find a young soloist with a Soprano Saxophone playing a very fresh, very simple music, presenting his simple dream, what “The Dark Age” believes is ridiculous. “A Hope in The Dark Age” is about the conflict of generations, the fight of a fresh dream of the young generation what can’t survive in the presence of -what I call- “the dark age”.

Year: 2018

Duration: (±) 8’

Instrumentation: Arabic Singer, Clarinet, Cello, Prepared Percussion & Live Visuals

World Premiere:

Event: meine Stimme, deine Stimme, unsere Stimme – Cairo Contemporary Music Days 2018

Date: April 28th, 2018

Place: El-Hanager Thater in Cairo

Ensemble: Kamilya Jubran & Egyptian Contemporary Music Ensemble ECME

Program note:

Inspired by the title “My Voice, Your Voice, Our Voice” composer Bahaa El-Ansary tries to express the problems of cultural and individual clashes by using a theatrical approach to his composition that is reflecting back to the music played by the ensemble.

During the piece an unreadable text in Latin letters is written on a board, that will evolve into an Arabic text from Kitab Al Naby by Khaleel Gubran. The sound of the board will be manipulated electronically and the music reflects the structure of the text.

On both levels, musically and semantically, the piece describes the dilemma of communication: The sender and the receiver are closed systems. Whether the message sent will be understood by the receiver is uncertain. And if it is understood, it is only translated into the receiver's own concepts of reality.
